Find more traffic laden keywords
Everyone wants more traffic. Still most do not know how to excel at the one thing that will insure their website is jammed with traffic like a London ringway at rush hour. That is, ... they fail to do anywhere near enough keyword marketing research.
Granted reading one article will not make you an expert. Still I can at least begin to bring you up to speed when it comes to finding visitors laden top search terms. To do so I will reveal four of my sacred keyword research rules of thumb.
A useful rule of thumb is that about ten hours will be needed to analyse each hour of recorded data.
My first rule of thumb is simple. Do not settle for the obvious keyword phrases. I know ... sounds obvious, yet apparently isn't. For example the term : "search traffic" gets 10 – 100 searches/month in Google alone. While going up against 1.710.000.000 other pages.
Not insurmountable ... I like less of a challenge. Especially when "personalized search traffic" gets 0 - 10 searches/month in Google alone and only has 88.200.000 competing pages. Extreme example, yet ... relevant.
See the difference one word makes ? Similar to the difference between fire and a fire beetle, noh ? Since you get nearly the same number of searches with no where near the same number of competing pages.
The next secret rule of thumb is to compare the plural verses singular forms to see which is better. Since when it comes to this most webmasters tend to pile onto the wrong choice.
Take the term "best website to start a blog". It gets 10 – 100 searches, and has 5.600.000.000 competing pages in Google. While "best websites to start a blog" gets also 10 – 100 searches and faces 1.830.000.000 competitors. In other words it has less than a third of the competition for about the same amount of searches. So ... we're on the right track. Best of all "best website to start blogs" is used by 10 – 100 searchers. And only has to fend off 658.000.000 annoying competitors. Or what you might call a jam. In my region ... by the way.
Your third keyword research tactic involves grabbing the low hanging fruits. Or what I call "orphaned keywords".
Ideally you're looking for search terms with less than 1.000.000 competing pages in Google when searching for the EXACT phrases. 500.000 or less is better still. Less than 100.000 best. You don’t have to be a marketing genius to realize that there is a lot of competition for certain keywords and that it is going to be extremely hard to rank for those terms.
Of course the closer to 100.000 competing pages you get for a search term, the more likely it is your pages will be to rumble onto the top 10. These are true "orphaned keywords". So named due to ignorance by your competitors.
Then also don't forget to think outside the box. Just like your potential customers do. Say you had a law practice in London. One term you might consider is "criminal defense lawyer". That gets let's say 100 – 1K searches but faces 98.700.000 competing pages. I'm not wild about those odds. Plus the term really isn't very targeted. Digging deeper I found that "criminal defense lawyer London" gets let's say 10 – 100 searches. And only has 27.900.000 pages to beat out. What's wisdom ??!
Digging deeper still ... "criminal defense attorney London area" gets 0 – 10 searches. yet has 34.300.000 competing pages.
Once again ... I turned up search terms with total searches at least in the same area as the generic term I started with. Yet ... with a lot of competing pages to deal with. Rarely do I fail to do this. In fact you'll discover dozens of such gemstones by thoroughly researching your keyword universe.
Nevertheless don't forget that keyword marketing research is thé factor that determines the success or failure of your niche website. Applying rules of thumb like these above can help you do smarter optimised keyword marketing. Which in turn will help you attract more traffic from search engines more easily. And traffic is something we could all use more of, ... right ??!
